Wait, wrong poster.
There we go.
Let's start out with what I liked. First off, the action. DAMN this has to have some of the best action scenes in a comic book movie, most notably the Elves' attack on Asgard and the final London battle. It was pretty much Thor mixed with the game Portal, what's not to like? I also liked that most characters improved from the first. Thor and Loki were pretty much the same as they were in The Avengers which is a good thing, and Jane was a much more likable character this time around. Odin, Heimdall, Sif, Volstagg, and Fandral were also improved, but I still think we should have seen more of the last three. While the story is a bit basic, it still lead to some really good action. I'll save the mid and post credits scenes and the future of the franchise for later in the article.
Now let's get to what I didn't like. First off, Malekith has to be one of the worst comic book movie villains. The film didn't give him enough time to be fleshed out, and worst of all, there was a giant plot hole at the beginning of the movie: the Aether was RIGHT NEXT TO HIM. He had enough time to absorb it and the movie would be over like that. I wouldn't be saying this had it been further away, but considering he was right behind it is a pretty dumb move on the writer's part. While we're on characters I think didn't work, let's go to Darcy and Selvig. While I'll admit Darcy had some good lines and Selvig led to a great Stan Lee cameo, most of the time they we're on screen I just wanted to get back to Asgard. They really could have just been saved for the end of the movie. One last thing, why the hell didn't Frigga make an illusion of herself in her death scene? I mean she did it just fine for Jane, but this was just so Thor and Loki could be reunited. A better way to have done this would have been to get her critically injured thus leading to them reunited. It's a shame since Frigga could have been a great character.
Alright, so what does this movie mean for the MCU? I'll talk about the ending and post credits scene since they go hand in hand and the producers probably just put Thor coming to earth as the post credits scene so the Loki reveal would be more exciting. Thor turns down Odin's offer to be king of Asgard so he can live with Jane on earth, but surprise! Odin wasn't there and it was Loki! Does this mean Odin got killed by Malekith? I'm going to say no. He's probably trapped in Loki's prison cell and Loki just used a guard as him before he, Thor, and Jane left Asgard. Either way I can't wait to see how this plays out in Age of Ultron or Thor 3. To close this off, let's talk about the mid credits scene.
WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW!!!!!!!
Sorry, but I sort of geeked out at that scene. That scene not only gave us a look at Guardians of the Galaxy, but it also gave us a look at the future of the MCU. For those who were dumb enough to leave when the credits started (I won't say you were dumb for leaving after this scene because the post credits scene was meh) or had to go to the bathroom really bad, I'll recap it for you if you haven't heard about it yet. We see Sif and Volstagg visit this guy called The Collector, who will be one of the villains in Guardians of the Galaxy. They're giving him the Aether, which in the MCU will be one of the Infinity Gems (nobody knows which gem it will be), because having two Infinity Gems so close together is dangerous. The other Infinity gem they're referring to is the Cosmic Cube (or Tesseract, if you want to go by the more referred name in the MCU), which Kevin Feige said will be the Space Gem. At the end of the scene The Collector says, "One down, five to go." NERDGASM!!!!!!! This is going to play a giant part for Thanos since he needs Infintiy Gems for the Infinity Gauntlet. You see, the Infinity Gauntlet is a glove that requires six gems to give the possessor Godlike powers. Thanos is the villain who's being hyped for Avengers 3 with the Infinity Gauntlet storyline and I for one can't wait. The only question is, where are the other 4 gems? The Collector has one and so does Asgard. If I had to guess, one of the Guardians of the Galaxy has one, Tony Stark has one, SHIELD has one, and Doctor Strange has one (providing he's in Phase 3). Again, this is all just guessing.
Overall, despite some flaws, Thor: The Dark World was great and I'd give it a 9/10.
